High rate of suicide in Nunavut Arctic!

CBC News North reported on Januray 10, 2014 that 45 people among a population of +-  35.591 died by suicide in Nunavut (North of Canada) in 2013 which is the highest number recorded for any given year since the territory’s creation in 1999!

In 2012, 27 people died by suicide in Nunavut whereas 33 Nunavut residents died by suicide in 2011. This continuing health problem shocked the territory this past August when news broke that an 11-year-old boy in Repulse Bay had taken his life

The Government of Nunavut, Department of Health is encouraging Nunavummiut to “Break the Silence.”

They created last year two videos (here below) encouraging people to talk about suicide. In one video, they dispel many of the myths and stigmas often associated with suicide.

The second video shows the importance of talking and breaking the silence.
