Dixie Dansercoer: statue & departure to Antarctica

Dixie Dansercoer is born in Nieuwpoort – Belgium. The town council of Nieuwpoort wanted to celebrate on the 16th of September 07 his new polar expedition departure to Antarctica by raising an impressive statue the “Polar Traveler”.

The sailing yacht “Euronav Belgica” has set sail from Antwerp in Belgium on this 15th of September 07 to Antarctica to commemorate the 110th Anniversary of the original expedition lead by Andrien de Gerlache de Gomery (1897 – 1899).


A stop at Nieuwpoort on the 16th of September 07 was proceeded to celebrate its final departure to the South Pole.


“…Their wish is to undertake this venture (September 07 – January 08) in order to contribute:


=> to the celebration of Belgium’s involvement in Antarctic matters on the whole and more specifically the inauguration of the new Belgian scientific Princess Elisabeth;


=> to public awareness to the fragile nature of Antarctica as the prime barometer of our Globe’s health;


=> to underline the importance of history with a re-enactment of Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery’s exploit with the Belgica…”
