The “Belgica” at the Polaris center of Brussels?
The legendary sailing vessel of the explorer Adrien de Gerlache – the “Belgica” – is at 22 meters deep in a Norwegian fjord… The 19th of Mai 1940, the sailing boat was destroyed by a german air raid.
History=> The 16 of August 1897 – from Antwerpen (Belgium) – he lead the first ever scientifical mission in the Antarctic. After an unexpected harsch winter spent overthere, the vessel finally came back on the 28th of Ferbruary 1898.
Other missions on board of the “Belgica” were lead particularly in the arctic.
The “Belgica” symbol of the explorations of the Poles could have a great futur in a museum…
This cultural remain will maybe find its place in Brussels at the Polaris center of the International Polar Foundation ?
