Water, a “sacred” life element, World Water Day this 22/03/06

Under the leadership of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientifical and Cultural Organization), World Water Day  2006 will be guided by the theme “Water and Culture”.


Linking will be done between religion – art – science – social values and water…mainly at the hart of religious ceremonies, paintings, scientific practices – more info >>


The United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/47/193 of 22 December 1992 by which 22 March of each year was declared World Day for Water, to be observed starting in 1993. States were invited to devote the Day, as appropriate in the national context, to concrete activities such as the promotion of public awareness through the publication and diffusion of documentaries and the organization of conferences, round tables, seminars and expositions related to the conservation and development of water resources.



Few elements of the second UN World Water Development Report attract our attention =>


– “…1.1 billion people still do not have access to an adequate supply of drinking water;


– An estimated 1.6 million lives could be saved annually by providing access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene;


– Ninety percent of natural disasters are water-related events, and they are on the increase. Many are the result of poor land use. The tragic and developing drought in East Africa, where there has been huge felling of forests for charcoal production and fuel wood, is a poignant example…”.
