Iditarod, the 2006’s sporting event in Alaska…


For sled dogs lovers, the Iditarod trail is the most notorious and extreme race in the world. It has been called the “Last Great Race on Earth”. We could easily compare it to the cycling Tour de France event.


The race was born in 1973 in the center of Alaska (see here below map) in a small ghost village where he took is name from. Iditarod means in indian language : “distant place”.


Each team of 12 to 16 dogs and their musher will cover distances of around 1.150 miles (1.850km) in harsh cold weather where the terrain is various and beautiful (mountains, frozen rivers, dense forests, tundra).


Trail => Anchorage (southeast Alaska) heading for the interior land (Alaska Range) – then along the shore of the Bering Sea and finally reaching Nome in the northwest =>




Departure => on the 4th of March 2006 from Anchorage/ then on the 5th of March 2006 from Willow.
