Total Solar Eclipse of 2008 August 01

The next Total Solar Eclipse visible from the earth will occur on 01 August 2008. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes in front of the Sun and obscures it totally or partially. We speak then about an “occultation of the Sun by the Moon”.

The path of totality, the region on the Earth’s surface where the Sun will be totally obscured by the Moon, is visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses half the Earth. The path of the Moon’s umbral shadow begins in Canada & will then sweep northeastward, giving a glancing blow to northern Greenland, before heading southeast out of the Arctic Circle, central Russia, Mongolia, and China.

A partial eclipse should be seen within the much broader path of the Moon’s penumbral shadow, which includes northeastern North America, most of Europe and Asia.

This event of 01 August 2008 is now very much on the minds of eclipse “chasers” world-wide. A Total Solar Eclipse is considered as one of the most breathtaking phenomenons anyone can observe.
